Did you know that the first soundsystems in Jamaica were run by the political parties and powered by battery?

This month’s issue of Irie Up traces the history of the soundsystem from early days in Jamaica to the UK in the 60s and 70s and then on to Europe in the late 1980s and early 1990s. It’s full of wonderful and strange stories from the world of the soundsystem, from Kingston street corners to London basement clubs and the reggae festivals of Europe.

The story is illustrated by a set of pictures by
Michael Thompson and Mau Mau.
